Dr. Jeff Iorg, president of Gateway Seminary in Ontario, California was plenary speaker during the 51st Lide-Walker Bible Conference last January 6 to 8, 2020 at the Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary (PBTS). The theme of the conference was the “Character of Leadership” based on Jeff Iorg’s book of the same title. Dr. Iorg spoke on a variety of leadership themes including: “Holy Living for Ministry Leaders”; “Character Transformation in Christian Leaders”; “Spiritual Foundations for Christian Leaders”; “Moral Purity for Ministry Leaders”; “Maintaining Integrity as a Ministry Leader”; “Demonstrating Courage as a Ministry Leader”; “Core Distinctives of Ministry Leaders”.
For Iorg, Christian leadership is a “laboratory” of forming Christians in leadership to be formed into the character of Jesus Christ. To become like Jesus is “better” than the “things we can accomplish”. “Being is better than doing”, says Iorg. He argues in two ways: first, “God doesn’t need us to get anything done”; second, because, “God’s primary purpose is people not projects”.
The conference also featured lectures by Dr. Maurice Sañosa on “The Injured Brain”, PBTS President Emeritus Fred Saure on the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 in light of current theological issues, and an overview of PBTS President, Dr. Armand Canoy’s latest book on preaching (“Preaching Nga Ba o Assuming Lang” CSM, 2019).
The Lide-Walker Bible Conference by the PBTS is an annual gathering of both ministers and laity exploring various biblical and theological themes. The conference was attended by 594 delegates.
