Reflects on Suiting Up and Sweating Out

Last August 29 to September 1, 2017, the PBTS community along with churches nearby gathered at the PBTS chapel for this year’s Spiritual Emphasis Week. Based on the spiritual armor God provides a believer (Eph. 6:10-17), this year’s theme is “Suit Up and Sweat Out”. The speaker is Rev. Jonathan Edwards “Jay” O. Banzuelo. Currently, Banzuelo is a professor of Philosophy in various colleges, including Febias College of Bible. He is also pulpit minister at Christian Gospel Center, and broadcaster at 702 DZAS, Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC).

Banzuelo spoke on practical lessons on what it means to prepare one’s self for the fight, the credibility of Christianity and the Scripture, and what worldviews one faces in the world. Banzuelo spoke in 7 sessions covering different topics during chapel hour (9:30-10:30) and evening sessions from 6:30 to 8:00pm.

For Banzuelo, to “suit up and sweat out” means to commit one’s self to excellence noting that it does not happen by chance but by intentionality, and an attitude that has God’s “satisfaction” in mind. He also examined how Christianity compares to the “secular” worldview emphasizing how it creates a better life of flourishing than what currently is predominant.

During the last service, Banzuelo offered a challenge to “live a life pleasing to God” from Philippians 1:27-30. He presents that growth and maturity is reflected in how a Christian conducts himself in everyday life and his knowledge of Christ. Maturity should be the aim of every Christian. Illustrated through a balance, a Christian’s maturity is seen in the congruence of both knowledge and behavior. One must have adequate knowledge of Christ resulting in right conduct. In the same way, right conduct is motivated by one’s knowledge of Christ. Maturity is seen in the growing consistency of knowledge and conduct.

Wrapping up the Spiritual Emphasis Week, the seminary observed the Communion, officiated by Mr. Francis Samdao, chapel coordinator. A “boodle fight” also followed as the PBTS community ate lunch together.
